I love watching Ruby paint. Completely uninhibited by self-conciousness, skill or the need for representation, she's just painting (as I used to) for the sheer fun of experiencing the physicality of the paint and the curiosity of seeing what happens when you slide one colour into another. It's such a magical part of childhood and so short-lived an expression of creativity, before self awareness of your limitations puts you off doing it. I think it's tragic that every child loves painting and drawing but stop when they start to perceive they're not good at it. I hope Ruby and Lucas will pursue whatever creative channel they enjoy and not be put off by feeling they have to be especially gifted, talented or skilled at something which can be enjoyed just for the enjoyment and satisfaction of doing it.
